Well kittens, here we are- Friday and the last installment of Retro Modern Illustrators. I think maybe this was not my most beloved of themes with you dear readers, but if I was able to inspire even one person, then my job is done.
Today's post is about my favorite modern artist: S.Britt. Stephan Britt is a high school dropout who is an artistic genius. I think his work is absolutely brilliant and I think he could be the next Ed Emberley (a very famous children's book illustrator). His work hearkens of the past, but S.Britt's look is very much his own. Personally, I think the kid has one screw loose, and that adds to the bizarre quirkiness of his art. Check this out:
The sophistication of his color layering, the graphic details, and the attention to space and form are far superior to the other modern artists I have discussed - with the exception of Shag. Shag's colors are stunning, but his layering is simple at best- which is fine for the look he is going for, but in all honesty, his style is just plain easier to achieve then S.Britt's look.
One of S.Britt's biggest influences is Richard Scarry. If you have ever read a book as a child, then you must recognize the work of Richard Scarry. He is the illustrator for famous books like Cars And Trucks And Things That Go, Please And Thank You, and Busy, Busy World. Maybe this will jog your memory:
Aren't those a trip down memory lane? I remember being fascinated by Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. I would spend hours looking for Gold Bug, and now I have passed that enthrallment to my children.

You can see the influence Scarry has on S.Britt, especially with the colors they both use. But the faces in S.Britt's work vary greatly from the characters designed by Scarry, and that is where S.Britt's genius lies. He has taken a myriad of retro devices and created a look that is both nostalgic and timeless.
I have been writing a lot about people and things that influence and inspire me- from Dita Von Teese to Shag. You can find my prevalence for Dita in my little summer dresses and high heel affectation, and the colors I love such as turquoise and mint green in many of Shag's compositions. What makes muses so wonderful is that they inspire us to a bigger greatness then we might have achieved alone- and that is why I want to continue to share with you the people, places and things that influence my life and might end up inspiring you.
