Hair Scarf Tutorial

How to tie a vintage scarf around a chignon

The other day I posted this as an easy and fast way to wear your hair in a vintage style. Some dear readers requested a tutorial, so here it is!

First, lay out a scarf. Any scarf will do, I used my favorite silk scarf. I didn't iron it before because it is just going to get terribly wrinkled as you wind it around your bun.

Then fold the scarf in half on the bias (45 degree angle). This gives the fabric more flexibility then if you fold it in half on the grain.

Then fold it again by taking the top and folding it down to the bottom as shown:

Then fold again in half to create a wide band:

Now, put your hair in a bun:

Next, take the scarf and wrap it around the bun and tie it on the top of the bun with a 'tail' in either hand:

Next comes the 'tricky' part. Open one side (I used my left 'tail') so it isn't folded up anymore and draw it across your bun. The purpose of this is to cover the bun with the fabric so you don't see any hair.

Then hold the fabric with your fingers and sort of tuck them around your bun so the fabric is held taut and then begin to twist the 'tails' around the bun:

Continue to twist the tails around the bun and when they are done, just tuck the ends in under the fabric you already twisted. This time I twisted both in a clockwise direction. Other times it felt like one wanted to go clockwise, the other counterclockwise. You just have to practice.

And when you are all done, your bun should be completely covered by the scarf and the tails should be wrapped around the bun. I have found a thinner scarf to be easier to tie then a thick one. Good luck and just keep practicing.
