The new Chanel movie is opening next week, so I have been thinking about her a lot. I have read many books about Chanel and I just love her story. Rumor has it that Chanel created the 'little black dress' after her lover, Boy Capel, died a tragic death and wanted 'the world to morn'. Whatever the case may be, Chanel is credited with creating the most basic piece of any woman's wardrobe. The thing is, I don't really like the little black dress! I find it kind of safe and boring. There are few black dresses that I don't think would look better in a color. So I thought I would surf the net and try to find a few black dresses that I would actually wear. Let's take a look, shall we? I added shoes to each dress, because really? The shoes are the best part.
1940's Butterfly Dress
Betsy Johnson Shoes
I like this dress because of the butterfly detail and the peplum. I think it would give any girl a sexy shape without looking slutty. And wouldn't those Betsy Johnson shoes be perfect with the dress!
1950's Chiffon Dress
Ga Ga Shoes
This is the perfect simple black dress. I like it because of the shape- it is one of my favorites. I also like the chiffon because I always wanted to be a ballerina. Now, you might be questioning the shoes, so hear me out: right now there is a huge trend of wearing hard and soft together. I think it can look very edgy and chic. I thought these were fun shoes because it has the pink, which reminds me of being a ballerina, with the punk details on the heel. I also think it keeps the outfit fresh, not dated, which many people are looking for with vintage right now.
Wiggle Dress
Louboutin Heel
Isn't that neckline amazing! If I have to pick a black dress, then I like the dress to have something 'special' about it and in this case it is obviously the reverse scallop neckline. I also like the fact that the dress has sleeves, which is so uncommon amongst modern cocktail dresses.
1960's Lace Dress
Velvet Heel
Is this dress cheating? It isn't exactly a little black dress due to the white lace, but I love the shape and I think it is so in vogue right now. It is kind of like the 60's and the 80's together, both of which are so popular today. I liked that the shoes are velvet, which is repeated on the dress right above the ruffle.
Strapless Rose Gown
Brian Atwood Mules
This dress is one of my favorites. I visit it every now and again online because I think it is stunning. I have nowhere to wear such a dress or I would totally get it. I just think the draping is stunning and the pink floral detail is something straight out of haute couture. Can you see this dress with a pair of pink heels and emerald earrings?
Rhinestone Wiggle Dress
Valentino Heels
This is my favorite dress of the lot. If it was my size I swear I would buy it and just wait for an opportunity to wear it. I think the rhinestone detailing is delightful, the shape is sexy, and the neckline is perfect. And those Valentinos are stunning!
So which one is your favorite dress? Do you even own a 'little black dress' and if so, do you wear it very often?
