Retro Modern Party Planning: 4th of July

I love the 4th of July! I love the colors, the excitement, and the fact it is mainly a daytime (or late afternoon) event. This gal gets tired by 9:00pm so I tend to be the first one to leave an evening clambake. As I have mentioned, this year we will be spending Independence Day in Palm Springs, so no bar-b-ques are planned- just fun in the sun. But if I was to host a party for the 4th, here is what I would do:

When most people plan a party they first decide on the food, or the flowers, or the theme. I tend to start with a great plate. I collect paper plates all year long because I love to add color to my table and paper goods are the best way to achieve a really fun affect. I know it is wasteful, but on Shabbat (my sabbath) we are not allowed to wash dishes, so I tend to use paper. If you abhor the idea of paper, then I would use a set of glass dishes and put the colored plate under the clear plate to get the same affect, but without the waste. Just collect the paper plates and save them for a different party!

Lets begin with this red with white polka dotted plate. I like the retro polka dots and the bright cherry color. These would be placed on a bright white tablecloth.

I love this idea for the floral centerpieces. These are soooo easy to make. You just purchase a green or Styrofoam ball from any art supply store (Michaels, JoAnnes, etc) and keep adding carnations until the whole thing is filled. How great is that?

Being a vegetarian, I skip the meat, but I love to focus on all the yummy side dishes such as:

Coleslaw (via Martha)

Potato Salad (via Martha)

Corn Salad (via Martha)

Pasta Salad (via Martha)

Green Salad and Corn Bread (via Martha)

Lemonade (via Martha)

and of course,

Apple Pie (via Martha)

What are you kittens doing this 4th of July? I want to see pictures on all of your blogs with your wonderful vintage outfits that you picked out special for the holiday!
